Hats on for cancer

October 5, 2016 By Team Up 4 Community

To celebrate September as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the Wantagh Elementary School student council hosted a schoolwide Hat Day to raise money for the Jimmy Fund Clinic at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Students not only wore their funkiest hats on Sept. 30, but were encouraged to donate a dollar for a great cause. In total, the student council collected $1,049 in donations for the Massachusetts-based clinic, which treats various pediatric cancers.

Women’s Basketball Assists at Neumann Residence

October 4, 2016 By Team Up 4 Community

MANHASSET, N.Y. (Oct. 3, 2016) – Over the weekend, the LIU Post women’s basketball team lent a hand to the Neumann Residence in Manhasset.

The Pioneers assisted in cleaning and organizing the attic, while also engaging in arts and crafts with the residents and decorating the house for Halloween.

“I learned a lot about my student-athletes today,” said Head Coach Deirdre Moore. “They were kind and compassionate. The amount of time and care they took with each resident was so impressive. I was so proud to hear them addressing and referring to the residents by name. They made connections with people that they may not have necessarily come in contact with. I was proud of their effort, enthusiasm and willingness to help. I know this experience is something that will always remain with them.”

The Neumann Residence is one of 13 residences operated by Catholic Charities, and is home to 10 developmentally-disabled adults. The residents use sign and body language to communicate with the many different groups that come to their home to visit with them.

Miller Place High School Makes Wishes Come True

October 4, 2016 By Team Up 4 Community

Miller Place High School students showed off their school spirit by selling Make-A-Wish wristbands and magnets during their Spirit Week.

On Saturday they invited Wish kid Jesse to their Homecoming celebration where he not only led the parade but also went on the field during Halftime and yelled “Go Panthers” to help boost the moral of the football team!

Thank you to all who participated in this fundraiser. Your hard work and determination is what helps make wishes come true!

Make-A-Wish® Suffolk County grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.

Running for a cure

October 3, 2016 By Team Up 4 Community

West Babylon Senior High School girls varsity cross-country team participated in the Fit for a Cure 5K at the Tanger Outlets in Deer Park on Oct. 2. Sponsored by the Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition, all proceeds of the race go to the fight against breast cancer. The team showed their support for West Babylon alumna Shannon Romanchuk Saturno – who lost her battle with breast cancer earlier this year – by wearing their “Striding for Shannon” and sporting handmade T-shirts.
West Babylon Senior High School junior Tara Hauff placed first out of all the female runners with a time of 19:30. In addition, eighth-grader Josephine Critchley and senior Dana Beggins won their respective age divisions.
The West Babylon girls varsity cross-country team is currently 3-1, and will take part in the division championship meet on Oct. 25. The team has also qualified for the county championship meet on Nov. 4.

Hauppauge Kicks for Cancer

October 3, 2016 By Team Up 4 Community

Kicks for Cancer began in 2008 to support Hauppauge High School soccer player Courtney Tomkin, who passed away while bravely battling brain cancer.

The Hauppauge community, family and student-athletes will continue to honor her and remember her strength every year.

This past week despite the rain they came together to raise funds and awareness for this worthy cause.
